“Cats'Heuvel is anything but a copy of its predecessor”, says Aldus Egbert Hoogenberk of the Bureau voor Harmonische Architectuur. Hoogenberk followed the frontage line and height of the old residential building and preserved the original façade, retaining details of shape and colour. An additional storey was added to the building, using the 90 cm of wasted space between the storeys. The new building now has four staircases instead of two, creating space for homes that run from front to back and thereby giving each residence a warm and cool side. Also new is the addition of outdoor areas in the form of lavishly detailed balconies. Contours, details, bricks and design rhythm remain the same throughout. The interior has also been restored, with rounded corners, parquet floors, stylish doors and woodwork. The walls are finished in cream, and the woodwork is ochre with occasional green accents. The shared areas have marble floors, red runners and attractive stained glass. “Cats'Heuvel belongs here and is connected to this very spot”, adds Hoogenberk. “It is neither ‘retro’ architecture nor neoclassicism… Cats'Heuvel is the real thing.” |
